Socialist Action /November 1999

LA Youth
With the dawn of a new school year, the Los Angeles Youth for Socialist
Action (YSA) has gotten of to a great start in building a presence on the
L.A. campuses as a revolutionary youth leadership.
Along with organizing on the UCLA campus, where the biggest L.A. YSA
is, we have established roots in several other campuses, with Santa Monica
College (SMC) and Cal State San Marcos being the two newest additions to
places where YSAs are forming and are active.
At UCLA, we have started up the coalition again that the YSA initiated
last year for Mumia Abu-Jamal (the Student Mobilization to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal).
We are planning big actions and events, including video showings, forums,
and a teach-in towards the end of the quarter. Many student organizations,
such as the Samhoung Filipino group, USAC (the undergrad student government),
the Environmental coalition, and much more have been involved in the coalition.
On Oct. 27, 80 people attended a YSA forum on "Che Guevara and the
Cuban Revolution." In November, we are planning a forum in support
of the current UNAM student strike in Mexico. As well as having a YSA speaker,
there will be a speaker from a new Latino group on campus, Conscienca Libre,
who just came back from Mexico City.
Later in the quarter, San Francisco YSAer Javier Armas will come here
to speak on affirmative action. We have also started a class on Jim Cannon's
classic work "Socialism on Trial." For information on forums and
classes, call (310) 208-4159, or email us at LAsocaction@hotmail.com.
With the progress we have made at other campuses, we will also be holding
events and classes elsewhere. We are planning to have forums at SMC and
San Marcos in November, and soon after to start up discussion classes there
on Marxist theory.
The outlook for growth here seems to be very promising. We urge all youth
who care about changing the world to get active with us.
