Gray Panthers Event: Whose Bailout? Whose Economy? Where do we go from here? A discussion with Jeff Mackler, of Socialist Action. Is “the economy” just the stock market and the financial sector, as it’s been pictured for years? Is it worth saving an “economy” that can revive itself only by creating another boom that will then go bust?  Are there fairer or more sustainable ways it can be saved?  What would it take to get these fairer or more sustainable ways?  Is the problem greedy and short-sighted financiers?  What are the similarities and differences between now and the 1930s? What role did ordinary people take? Where does the need for renewed infrastructure, affordable housing, improved education, and universal healthcare come in? Does money have to be based on debt? Read our statement on the bailout. Bring your questions and your opinions and a snack, if possible. Location: Unitarian-Universalist Center, Fireside Room, 1187 Franklin St (betw. O' Farrell, Geary, map,   # 38 bus)  (back to top)

We demand a specific date for the issuance of Municipal IDs!  A press conference and beginning of an ongoing demanding Mayor Gavin Newsom to set a specific date to begin issuing  Municipal IDs, as requested by immigrant advocates and approved by the Board of Supervisors.  The program is now supposed to begin in three months, but the lack of a specific date plus the anti-immigrant campaign by the SF Chronicle, the City’s tolerance of Minutemen rallies, and violations of immigrant youth’s rights have all created a lack of credibility in the City’s promises. We demand the Mayor publicly commit to a specific date to begin the Municipal ID program! Location: City Hall Steps.  More on this event. Read more on SF Municipal ID.  More on delaying the program. More information at 415-368-8481.  (back to top)

Renters Fight Back! Demand the return of Renters Credit, the annual rebate for low-income renters, which Schwarzenegger slashed as a $190.9 million line-item veto after the last state budget was agreed on. Demand an end to escalating rents. Down with the Ellis Act! Stop the attacks particularly hitting low-income seniors and disabled people. For decades, this program had made senior and disabled renters earning less than $44,096 eligible for up to $347.50 as a tax rebate. Last year, 467,000 renter households received payments averaging $316 per household. Join the state-wide Renter's Rally, which will occur simultaneously in San Francisco, San Jose, Fresno, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Read letter on cutoff of Renter Credit. Sign petition. Fax and Call-in Day: Let the SF8 defendants attend their NYC parole hearing. The SF8 are eight former Black Panther currently on trial for a murder committed over 35 years ago, in a prosecution based on false confessions extracted by police torture.  Read more.  SF8 members Herman Bell and Anthony Bottom were also imprisoned 35 years in New York City before the SF8 indictment. They are now eligible for parole from New York, but Schwarzenegger is refusing to allow them to be transferred back to New York to attend a parole hearing which could end their New York sentence. By extension, they could then be released from pre-trial confinement here, like the rest of the SF8 defendants.  SF facilities are meant for only short-term confinement, and Herman and Anthony's health is suffering as a result of 2 years in jail here. Please contact the Governor on Wednesday Nov. 19. Here's how.  Read more on the parole hearing issue.  (back to top)

Challenging Corporate Control of Water, panel discussion in response corporate water conference in SF. Global corporations are meeting in SF at a conference, “Corporate Water Footprinting: Towards a Sustainable Water Strategy,” ostensibly to discuss water conservation. Given the central role of water-intensive companies and the absence of those without access to water,  it is clear that the conference is designed to greenwash the very companies whose practices have denied people’s access to water. This panel discussion will to challenge the corporate agenda of privatization of water and place the focus on strengthening public institutions to deliver a public good to the public at large. Gray Panthers Monthly Event: Where is the Single-Payer Healthcare Movement Going? Obama, two Senators, and a coalition of business, some labor, and some health advocates are promoting failed plans to increase healthcare coverage using private insurance and public subsidies. On the other hand, two significant national meetings were recently held to press ahead with single-payer, the plan for equal, comprehensive, affordable healthcare for everyone, using public financing to pay today's doctors and hospitals. Don Bechler, of Single Payer Now, will report on these meetings, and other single-payer developments.
