Welcome to BfR!
Biointensive for Russia is a people-to-people agroecology project, fiscally sponsored by
Ecology Action. We promote GROW BIOINTENSIVE sustainable mini-farming through Russian-language publications and seminars hosted by ecology groups and agricultural colleges in Russian-speaking Eurasia. Over the years we have developed a network of Eurasian partner groups that offer models of sustainable living to people who are concerned about their own and children’s and grandchildren’s future food security. One of our Russian partners, the NGO Viola, has developed their own
Russian-language website.
To help support our work in Eurasia, we have held many fundraising events in Palo Alto, CA, usually with sustainable living themes. These have included solar cooking, double-digging, food preservation and junk mail reduction workshops, along with Biointensive and Permaculture garden tours. Our most exciting recent fundraising event was “An Evening with KITKA and Filmmaker Yelena Zmushko to Benefit Ecogardening in Eurasia” on April 21; it is reviewed in our newsletter, the
Summer 2007 Garden Companion. Even more exciting for BfR’s director, Carol Vesecky, was her move of her home along with the project in Fall 2007 from Palo Alto to Ojai Valley (east of Santa Barbara). She plans to conduct more events there, and can host visitors. Contact us to join our e-list, Local or National, for news of our and our partners’ activities!
Russia/Ukraine July 2007Culture/Eco-Ag Tour Revisited:
Just four of us Americans traveled together for the entire tour last summer, but six Russians and two Americans also joined us for one or more days in the Moscow/Golden Ring and Smolensk areas. We were graciously hosted by our partners and those of
Friends Of Chernobyl Centers-US (FOCCUS) in the Moscow, Bryansk, and Kiev areas. You’ll find a full write-up by ecotourist Joe Jedeikin and tour leader Carol Vesecky by clicking
here; here are links to
Joe’s photos and a few of
Carol’s photos. For a quick glance at the itinerary, see the
Ecotour Brochure [PDF-1.8M]. We all have fond memories of the tour!
If you're interested in learning more about BfR, be sure to follow the links to other newsletters, and contact us for occasional free email updates. Your financial support is needed for future publications and workshops, so if possible, please also join us. In return, we’ll keep you up-to-date with twice-annual paper newsletters, and welcome even more your emails and calls!
The map shows all the cities in Russia and Uzbekistan where we have held, and hope to hold, GROW BIOINTENSIVE workshops, or have competent teachers in our network. Our plans for workshops in Kiev and Bryansk to which teachers from the Chernobyl Centers will be invited have been moved to 2008. We are currently seeking funding for these and a major workshop to be held in October with South Carolina Biointensive teacher Steve Moore presenting. The NGO VIOLA continued its experiments in Russia’s Chernobyl radiation zone in 2007; in the past they have shown that GROW BIOINTENSIVE compost and double-digging can lead to a reduction of 30% in the radiation in the vegetable harvest. Please
contact us to request their reports as attachments.
Irina Kim’s plans for follow-up workshops in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan have also been postponed to 2008.
Join us to help make them happen!
